Mac Prep and Prime Fix + Spray: Review

I don’t know about you, but the more expensive a beauty product is, the less likely I am to make riskier purchases. It’s one thing grabbing a couple of Essence products (a brand I LOVE by the way) and trying them out but if I’m paying £15+ for a single item, I like to be fairly sure that it’s what I’m after (this probably why I’ve never owned a Tom Ford lipstick, gorgeous as they look!). I wasn’t sure what I was going to think about Mac’s Prep and Prime Fix+ Spray and the full size is relatively expensive compared to drugstore setting/finishing sprays, so I was pleased to find that a ‘sized to go’ version was available for a more reasonable £10.

This bottle contains 30ml of product and is a good size for your handbag or travel.

I’ve seen mixed reviews on this product; lots are positive but some are a little negative because users expect it to make their makeup stay on longer. The fact that it’s called ‘Fix+’ might be part of the confusion.

Here’s how Mac describes this product:

‘A lightweight, mineral rich finishing mist that refreshes the skin and finishes makeup. Helps create an even surface for a smooth makeup application.’

So, the product is intended be used to prime skin before applying foundation or as a finishing spray afterwards. If you’re a watcher of YouTube videos, you’ll know that this cult favourite has been around long enough for people to find other ways to use it. Some people love to use this on their eyeshadow brush to change up the formula/finish of their eyeshadow. Others like to spray it on their foundation brush before applying.

Personally I’ve been using it on top of my makeup as a finishing spray. I have combination/oily skin and always set foundation with translucent powder. I have to do so to keep my foundation in place. However it’s easy to overdo the powder and push the look from matte into cakey and it’s a hard mistake to correct. The lovely Wayne Goss on YouTube mentioned that a spritz of this fixes that too-powdery look & he’s absolutely right, it does! It calms the cakey powdery look right down but leaves makeup in place.

As is the case with the Pro Longwear Foundation, the pump on this product can be locked by turning it. I’m a fan of this; it makes the product more portable.

I’m liking this product so far, it does exactly what I want re. dealing with over-powdering and leaves a lovely finish on my makeup as a whole.

Have you tried this product? How do you use it?

Wishing you good luck & happy days,

Kindra x

  1. I prefer it over finished face too – to bring some glow back to the skin after powdering. I so also like it as a primer before foundation. I think the glycerin in this product is what makes it work well as a primer.
